In October, Social Care Skills is also introducing several new courses, expanding our programme into areas of practice that are highly relevant to professionals working across social care. As always, our focus is on learning that professionals can take back into their organisations and apply to everyday practice.

1 October | Life Story Work: Helping Children Understand Their Journey

Life story work can play an important role in helping children and young people understand their experiences, relationships, identity and personal history. For children who are looked after, have experienced changes in carers or placements, or have lived through difficult experiences, understanding their own story can be particularly important.

This full-day seminar explores how professionals can approach life story work sensitively and purposefully, helping children make sense of their journey rather than simply creating a collection of information, photographs or significant events.

The course considers identity, relationships, difficult experiences, language, participation and the importance of ensuring that life story work remains centred on the individual child.

6 October | Matching Assessments for Safe and Suitable Placements

Effective matching is fundamental to safe, suitable and stable placements. This practical seminar explores the assessment and decision-making that should take place when considering whether a placement can appropriately meet a child or young person’s needs.

Participants will consider needs, risks, compatibility, the location of the service, staff knowledge, skills and experience, available resources, the impact on other children and the provider’s ability to safely deliver the proposed placement. The emphasis is on moving beyond whether a vacancy exists to answering the more important question:

Is this genuinely the right placement?

8 October | NEW: Care Planning in Children’s Social Care: From Assessment to Outcomes

Good care planning should do more than describe what professionals intend to provide. It should establish a clear connection between what we know about a child or young person, what they need, what we are trying to achieve and how support will contribute to meaningful change.

This new full-day seminar explores the complete care planning journey: Assessment → Need → Outcome → Plan → Intervention → Review → Progress

Participants will consider how to translate assessment information into meaningful plans, establish appropriate and measurable outcomes, involve children and young people in planning, connect everyday interventions to identified needs and evaluate whether the support being provided is actually making a difference.

The emphasis is on moving away from generic or task-led plans towards purposeful, individualised and outcomes-focused practice.

13 October | NEW: Cultural Competency in Social Care: Working Effectively Across Cultures

Working effectively across cultures requires more than knowledge of equality and diversity. This new seminar explores how culture can influence identity, communication, relationships, expectations, behaviour and the ways in which people understand and experience support.

Participants will consider their own cultural lens and assumptions, cultural humility, culturally responsive communication, identity and belonging, family and community relationships, and how cultural understanding can inform assessment and everyday practice.

The course will also explore an important professional challenge: How can we respect cultural difference without either interpreting difference as a problem or allowing concerns about cultural sensitivity to prevent appropriate professional challenge?

The aim is to develop practice that is culturally curious, reflective, respectful and responsive to the individual.

20 October | Children’s Homes Inspection Framework: Preparing for Inspection

Preparing for an Ofsted inspection should not begin when the inspector arrives. This full-day seminar explores the Children’s Homes Inspection Framework and how inspectors evaluate the experiences and progress of children, the help and protection they receive, and the effectiveness of leaders and managers.

Participants will explore the inspection process, the evidence inspectors may consider, how information is triangulated and how everyday practice contributes to inspection judgements.

Rather than focusing simply on being “inspection ready”, the seminar considers how effective practice, management oversight, quality assurance and evidence of impact can demonstrate the difference a children’s home is making to children’s lives.

23 October | NEW: Working with Young People Affected by the Criminal Justice System

Children and young people who come into contact with the criminal justice system should never be defined solely by offending behaviour. Their lives may also be affected by trauma, exploitation, disrupted relationships, exclusion from education, peer influence, substance misuse, adversity or previous experiences of abuse and neglect.

This new seminar explores how professionals can work effectively with young people who are offending, at risk of offending or otherwise affected by the criminal justice system. Participants will consider offending and criminalisation within the wider context of a young person’s experiences, including the relationship between trauma, adversity, exploitation and offending behaviour.

Particular attention will be given to care-experienced children, proportionate responses to incidents, avoiding unnecessary criminalisation, restorative and strengths-based approaches and supporting young people towards positive change.

27 October | Managing Serious Incidents: Responding, Reviewing and Learning

When a serious incident occurs, the quality of the immediate response matters, but effective incident management does not end when the immediate situation has been brought under control. This seminar explores the complete process of managing serious incidents, from the initial response through to review, organisational learning and improvement.

Participants will consider immediate safeguarding and risk management, management oversight, escalation, communication, recording, regulatory notifications where required and effective post-incident review.

The course then moves beyond the individual event to consider how managers can identify contributing factors, recognise patterns and themes, review existing risk assessments and plans, and ensure that learning results in meaningful changes to practice. The emphasis is not simply on whether the correct procedure was followed, but on what the incident tells us and how that learning can contribute to safer and more effective practice.

October’s programme brings together a broad range of learning opportunities, from life story work, matching and care planning to cultural competency, inspection preparation, criminal justice and serious incident management. Across the month, the focus remains on connecting professional knowledge with the realities of everyday practice.
