Exclusive CHLP Development Session | Subscribers Only
Overview
Matching decisions are among the most significant responsibilities of leadership in children’s homes. Accepting a new referral requires more than determining whether a home has an available bed. Leaders must consider the child’s individual needs, the compatibility of the proposed placement with children already living in the home, staffing capacity, safeguarding risks and the home’s ability to provide appropriate care.
These decisions can become particularly challenging when information is incomplete, placements are required urgently or there is pressure from placing authorities to accept a referral.
This exclusive Children’s Homes Leadership Programme (CHLP) Development Session provides an opportunity for subscribers to explore the complexities of matching decisions through facilitated professional discussion, shared experiences and reflection on real leadership dilemmas.
Rather than a formal training seminar, the session will encourage participants to exchange perspectives, challenge assumptions and consider how Registered Managers and senior leaders make safe, informed and defensible placement decisions.
Discussion Themes
Participants will be invited to explore questions such as:
- What makes a matching decision genuinely informed and defensible?
- How do we assess compatibility between a prospective child and those already living in the home?
- How should leaders respond when referral information is incomplete, inconsistent or potentially misleading?
- What weight should be given to staffing capacity, staff experience and the home’s existing dynamics?
- How do we balance the needs of an individual child with the safety and wellbeing of other children?
- When should a manager challenge a placing authority or decline a referral?
- How do organisational and financial pressures influence placement decisions?
- When should an initial matching decision be reconsidered as circumstances change?
Participants will also have opportunities to share anonymised experiences and discuss challenges encountered within their own services.
Interactive Leadership Discussion
A central question will guide the session:
“Would you accept a referral if the child’s individual needs appeared to match your home’s Statement of Purpose, but there were significant concerns about compatibility with an existing resident?”
Participants will consider a realistic referral scenario and discuss the information they would require before making a decision.
As additional details emerge, including safeguarding concerns, staffing limitations and pressure for an urgent admission, participants will be invited to reconsider their decisions and explain their professional reasoning.
The discussion will explore the consequences of accepting, declining or delaying a placement, including the potential impact on placement stability, safeguarding and children’s experiences.
The emphasis will be on professional judgement, constructive challenge and management accountability rather than identifying a single correct answer.
What Participants Will Take Away
The session aims to provide participants with:
- Opportunities to reflect on their approach to matching and admission decisions.
- Different perspectives on assessing compatibility and placement risks.
- Greater confidence in challenging referrals and requesting additional information.
- Practical ideas for managing pressure from placing authorities and within their organisations.
- Shared learning from other leaders facing similar placement decisions.
- A clearer understanding of how leadership decisions influence children’s safety, experiences and placement stability.
