Supporting young people to develop independence is one of the most important responsibilities for organisations working across children’s homes, supported accommodation and other services supporting young people. Yet many providers continue to face the same challenge: how to ensure that key work around independence is consistent, purposeful and clearly evidenced, rather than relying on ad-hoc resources or worksheets that are difficult to track and demonstrate during reviews or inspections.
We are pleased to introduce the Supported Learning Independence Programme, a structured framework designed to support organisations working with young people who require guidance and opportunities to develop practical independence skills and prepare for adulthood.
The programme has been developed from years of frontline experience working with young people, alongside a clear understanding of the operational realities faced by providers. It responds directly to a gap in the sector: the lack of structured, practical resources that support meaningful engagement with young people while also providing organisations with clear evidence of outcomes and progress.
At the heart of the programme is a growing library of themed learning modules, each consisting of two complementary components. Young people engage with a booklet designed to encourage reflection, discussion and practical skill development, while staff have access to a corresponding guidance module that supports them to facilitate the work in ways that are adaptable to each young person’s needs, preferences and circumstances. This ensures that the programme supports relational, person-centred practice, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.
The Supported Learning Independence Programme operates as a licensed framework, meaning providers gain access to the full booklet library, registering young people participating in the programme, track progress, submit completed work for review and download certificates recognising achievements. Certificates provide positive recognition for young people while also offering clear evidence of structured work that can be referenced in reviews, care planning discussions and inspection processes.
To maintain consistency and quality, each organisation nominates a Programme Lead, who oversees the implementation of the framework within their service. Programme Leads attend an onboarding session and are authorised to review and validate completed booklets internally before submission for certification. Social Care Skills also conducts quality assurance checks to ensure the programme is being delivered with integrity and in line with its intended purpose.
Importantly, the programme is not simply a library of worksheets. It is a structured system designed to support meaningful key work, strengthen accountability and recognise young people’s progress while remaining flexible enough to be adapted to different services and individual pathways.
The programme has been developed through a collaboration between Social Care Skills and The Gems Nest Collective, combining practical experience in service delivery, workforce development and independence support.
We believe that supporting young people to develop independence should be intentional, structured and recognised, and we hope this programme provides organisations with a practical tool to help achieve that.
